A-Eye Research Unit

Machine learning in visual science.

We are the A-EYE (Artificial intelligence/AI) unit within the University of Wisconsin – Madison Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS). We are embracing the unprecedented potential for AI to expand scientific inquiry by utilizing neural networks to generate hypotheses and make new discoveries.

The A-EYE unit uses deep learning methods and automated techniques to guide research investigations, which aim to identify novel features of a number of ophthalmic diseases including diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. AI can be used to explore associations between disease features that may not be readily apparent to humans.

We support the clinical research of current DOVS faculty, help sustain the efficiency of clinical trials managed by the Wisconsin Reading Center and develop new relationships with Industry.
